Aylesbury Peregrines
You are looking at the nest site of a pair of Peregrine Falcons, situated on the 12th floor of the Buckinghamshire Council building in Aylesbury town centre.
Peregrines are the fastest animal on the planet and can reach speeds in excess of 200mph.
They are an apex predator who catch and kill live birds on the wing - as such the footage here may contain gory images.
Peregrines first appeared on County Hall in 2007 and the nest platform was erected in 2010. They first attempted to breed in 2011 and birds have been present ever since.
The female is larger and greyer than the male. Our current male has a metal ring on his leg but we don't know where he is from.
Peregrines are awesome and exhilarating birds! We are very lucky to be able to watch these wonderful birds up close and personal.
Things are moving on quickly now.
If you've been watching today you might have seen that the larger/ older 2 chicks (more brown feathers) made the jump up onto the ledge today, the third one wasn't quite strong enough but he tried !
From now on they'll use the ledge a lot, more room there and can exercise those wing muscles.
Please be aware that there is about 2 metres of ledge underneath the camera which you just can't see, so please don't worry if you can't see one or more chicks for extended periods.
The male adult just delivered a Starling to the chicks which they were fighting over.
Enjoy the spectacle
Mike
My goodness the chicks are growing fast.
It's only 10 days since we ringed 3 balls (admittedly quite big ones) of white fluff, now look at them, feathers everywhere !
They are clearly eating well, whenever I get chance to look at the live feed they seem to be getting fed by Mum.
You may notice that the chicks and indeed the adults have a habit of bobbing their heads, or turning and twisting their heads a lot, sometimes this looks quite comical and a bit weird. The reason for this is that unlike humans Peregrines cannot rotate their eyes in their eye sockets, so they have to move their heads to see what they're looking at, to take meat being fed by Mum, or when they are hunting. Peregrines eyes are massive, they take up 50% of the skull !
It might not be too long until the adults bring in live prey to teach the chicks how to handle it, images of this might be upsetting to some.
2 weeks roughly until they might fledge, so enjoy the spectacle while you can.
Happy Watching
Mike
On Tuesday evening we ringed the chicks, apologies for the break in live feed yesterday as I'd turned the cameras off to do the ringing and we had to re-set them.
On Tuesday with the fantastic team from BORG (Bucks Owl + Raptor Group) we temporarily removed the chicks to process them and fit the rings under licence.
All 3 chicks now have a metal ring on their right leg, this is a BTO ring with a unique code. On their left leg they have an orange colour ring which also has a unique code in black, this is a unique code on this colour for Peregrines in the UK.
The Colour ring allows observers using binoculars or a telescope to read the code, report it and add to the history of the birds movements. Birds previously ringed in Aylesbury have previously been seen in Oxon and Sussex (breeding).
The chicks will grow rapidly, so do enjoy watching them, as in about three weeks they'll hopefully be 'on the wing'.
Enjoy !!

How exciting ! Not one, not two but three chicks succssfully hatched.
The fourth egg remains, and although it's still possible, as it was a good few days between egg 3 and 4 I'm not sure it's going to hatch now ?
It's amazing to watch just how quickly these chicks are going to grow. One minute, shortly after hatching, you think surely it can't even feed, and yet in 10 days or so it'll be time to ring them.
Mum is currently on the chicks keeping them warm in this chilly wind but at least it's dry and sunny for them.
Next week I'll be in Pembrokeshire, where I know I will see Peregrines. This is the first place I ever saw a Peregrine, a female that came right over my head. I can remember that moment like it was yesterday. It's no exaggeration to say that in that moment my life changed for better and forever :)
Enjoy watching the most amazing, powerful, incredible bird - bird number 1 !
