Blue-headed Wagtail Motacilla flava flava
Startops Reservoir - 13th April 2007

This is thought to be a male "Channel Wagtail" (though to be an intermediate from the small hybrid zone between flava and flavissima in northern France). It has been added here as a comparison to the other "Blue-headed" photos below.
Compared to the April 2004 bird below, the head is paler & blue more washed out, and there is more white in the supercilium, sub-moustashial stripe and throat (per Ben Miller who saw both birds).

This individual did not hang around and was seen to fly off north soon after being photographed.

This Blue-headed Wagtail was present close to Startops Reservoir for a few days, in a field which was just inside the Buckinghamshire boarder. The Blue-headed form of Yellow Wagtail is a scarce visitor to the county but is seen most years. To see charts of the species occurance in the county click here.
