Calvert Lake

The lakes at Calvert consist of the BBOWT Lake and the Sailing Lake.  They were dug in 19?? for the extraction of materials for the manuafcture of bricks at the local brick works.  etc. etc.

The large number of Gulls that roost at Calvert Lakes are one of the highlights of the site during the Winter months.  Thousands of the commoner gull species are sometimes joined by small numbers of Yellow-legged Gulls as well as the occasional Caspian Gull, Iceland Gull, Glaucous Gull and Mediterranean Gull.  The best time to see these birds is during the last hour of daylight from October through to March.

The photo below contains mainly Lesser Black-backed Gulls and some Herring Gulls.  A telescope is needed to be able to identify many of the gulls.
